Data Breach Alert: City website exposes firefighters personal information
March 17th, 2008 - Posted by Joe
The names, social security numbers, addresses and other personal information from union application forms of nine Minneloa, Florida firefighters were accidentally published on the city's website for almost two days, putting them at risk for identity theft.
The information was posted to the website while the city clerk was updating a meeting agenda related to the firefighters union. According to Minneola Mayor David Yaeger:
"The city clerk in this case, she does hundreds of thousands of pieces of
documents. This one slipped by. It's nothing intentional. We apologize".
The city manager has begun an internal investigation of the matter and there has been no determination as to whether or not the city clerk will be disciplined as a result of the data breach.
The city will provide each of the impacted firefighters with a year long subscription to a credit report monitoring service to help them protect against identity theft.
