Data Breach Alert: Utah hospital loses thousands of patient records

March 14th, 2008 - Posted by Joe

A laptop and flash drive with approximately 4,800 personal records, including name, social security number and health information, were stolen from University Healthcare Hospital in Utah in late February. Impacted patients began receiving notification letters this week.

Hospital officials said that the data was password protected and that it is unlikely that the criminals would be able to access any personal information. The hospital is revising their security policies to help prevent future data breaches. Employees will no longer be able to download patient personal data on to laptop computers.

The hospital will be providing credit report monitoring services to those consumers impacted by the data breach.

With your recommendation, I signed-up with Equifax for their FREE introductory special, from your website. After entering all my information and completing the purchase, with credit card info – I was confronted was ERROR message:
"WE'RE sorry, the system is temporarilyt unavailable. Please contact Customer Care at 1-877-474-8273"
This put me in contact with Maufin who was unable to verify my registration. THUS I cancelled my order with him, Cancellation # 50933402, April 19, 2008.
My dismay was there was NO warning the system was down; Equifax allowed me all the time/trouble to make complete entry, then "gotcha" system error. No Thanks!
