Apple OKs VoIP over wifi for the iPhone

March 6th, 2008 - Posted by Joe

Apple shocked many observers today by announcing that they will allow third party software developers to create applications that will enable iPhone owners to make voip calls over the device's built in wifi connection.

This is surprising for several reasons but mostly because this will effectively allow iPhone users to use VoIP to bypass AT&T's wireless service. AT&T is the exclusive wireless provider for the iPhone.

We reported earlier in the year about some unsanctioned attempts to route VoIP calls through the iPhone.

We expect that many established VoIP companies and some new players will likely begin developing Internet phone applications for the iPhone in the very near future. This is a big step forward for VoIP service in general.
