Vonage announced yesterday that they have settled an ongoing patent litigation with Nortel over technology for making 911 and 411 calls through VoIP networks.

Vonage Chief Legal Officer Sharon O’Leary said

“We are pleased to resolve this issue and enter into a productive relationship with Nortel,”

The settlement, which resulted in no monetary damages award to either Vonage or Nortel, was the last remaining patent litigation that Vonage had pending. Vonage had previously settled patent related cases with AT&T, Sprint Nextel and Verizon Communications.

This is great news for Vonage as it allows them begin 2008 with a totally clean slate and focus on continuing to build new, innovative product features (such as the recently released ContactBook), improve their newtork quality and overall scale without the distractions of legal wrangling ion the background.

Vonage is our favorite overall and highest rated Internet phone service provider and the only VoIP service that we feel is a true land-line telephone replacement. You can read more about Vonage and other VoIP providers by visiting our voice over IP by visiting our review and comparison site.
