Mobile VoIP developments run rampant in 2008
Posted by Joe on January 2nd, 2008
Although 2008 is less than 48 hours old, we have already seen a few very interesting developments in the mobile VoIP industry that impact both Sony's PSP and the Apple iPod Touch.
Sony will be announcing the addition of a VoIP service powered by skype on new versions of their PlayStation Portable, or PSP, gaming device. There are very few details available at this point, but according to Sony's website, PSP VoIP users will be able to "call friends, talk trash to fellow gamers or catch up with acquaintances."
Meanwhile, several sources are also reporting that a team of iPod Touch hackers have developed a solution to allow users to make VoIP calls from these devices. The solution is somewhat complex and its legality is dubious, but it is another example of how VoIP is continuing to evolve and challenge more traditional forms of phone service in the mobile device realm.
With more American consumers than ever using VoIP telephone services, it appears that 2008 should really be a banner year for this important communication technology as even more technological advancements are made across the industry.
We have been reviewing Internet telephone services for years and honestly feel that there is no better time than the present to make the switch to VoIP. Read our in-depth VoIP reviews and comparisons to learn more about VoIP providers and voice over IP in general.
